Domestic pulp production can not meet consumer demand. According to the data of China Paper Association, China's total pulp output in 2016 was 79.25 million tons, a slight decrease of 0.74% compared with the same period last year. Among them, the total output of wood pulp was 10.05 million tons, an increase of 4.03% over the previous year; the total output of waste pulp was 63.29 million tons, a slight decrease of 0.14% over the previous year; and the total output of non-wood pulp was 5.91 million tons, a significant decrease of 13.09% over the previous year. The total volume of imported wood pulp was 18.81 million tons, and the import dependence was 65.1%. The import dependence was relatively high.
In 2016, China's total pulp consumption was 97.97 million tons, an increase of 0.68% over the previous year. Among them, 28.77 million tons of wood pulp, an increase of 6.04% over the previous year; 63.29 million tons of waste pulp, a slight decrease of 0.14% over the previous year; 5.91 million tons of non-wood pulp, a significant decrease of 13.09% over the previous year. From the source of pulp, 1.05 million tons of wood pulp consumption are made in China, accounting for 34.93%, 18.81 million tons are imported (excluding the import of dissolved pulp), accounting for 65.07%; among the waste pulp, 4.21 million tons of domestic waste pulp, accounting for 63.53%, 23.38 million tons of imported waste pulp raw materials, accounting for 36.47%.
